During the 19th century when people died of bubonic plaque, many individuals like Catherine of Sienna served to alleviate pain and provided spiritual comfort.

During the middle ages, the institution of the church did much to serve the needs of the people. This was the situation until the time of the reformation.  Martin Luther led the way in efforts to deal with the problem of the poor between AD 1483 to 1546.
